Cirrhosis

Topic: Medical-surgical

Late-stage liver damage in which fibrous tissue and nodules replace normal tissue, most often from alcohol, chronic hepatitis B or C, or fatty liver disease. Portal hypertension and failing liver function lead to ascites, esophageal varices that can bleed massively, jaundice, a bleeding tendency and, as ammonia builds up, hepatic encephalopathy (confusion, asterixis). Weigh the client daily, measure abdominal girth, watch for bleeding and changes in mental status, give lactulose as ordered, avoid sedatives broken down by the liver, and support alcohol abstinence.

Also known as:
Liver cirrhosis, Hepatic encephalopathy, Esophageal varices, Ascites
In Turkish:
Siroz
