Connective tissue

Topic: Anatomy & physiology

Tissue that binds structures together and gives organs and the body a framework and support, with relatively few cells in an abundant intercellular matrix. It stores fat, transports substances, protects against disease and helps repair tissue damage. Common cells are fibroblasts, macrophages and mast cells. Its types include loose and adipose tissue, the fibrous tissue of tendons and ligaments, elastic tissue, cartilage, bone and blood. Most types have a good blood supply, and its cells divide more slowly than epithelial cells. Cancers of bone and soft tissues are sarcomas.
