Glandular epithelium

Topic: Anatomy & physiology

Epithelium specialized to produce and secrete substances. Exocrine glands release their product through ducts onto a surface; examples are sweat, sebaceous and mammary glands and the digestive enzyme glands. Endocrine glands are ductless; their hormones pass directly into the blood and act only on cells with receptors for them. The pancreas has both an exocrine part (digestive enzymes) and an endocrine part (insulin and glucagon). Cancers that arise in secretory epithelium are called adenocarcinomas.
