Mechanical ventilation
Topic: Medical-surgical
Moving air into the lungs with a machine, usually through an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy, when a client's own breathing is not enough. Monitor the tube's position and depth at the lips, suction when needed, answer alarms by looking at the patient first, and apply the ventilator-associated pneumonia bundle (head of bed 30–45 degrees, oral care, daily sedation interruption). If a problem cannot be fixed at once, ventilate with a bag-valve device.
