Empathy
Topic: Fundamentals
Understanding a person's feelings and experience from their point of view and conveying that understanding back, while keeping one's own perspective ("It sounds frightening to wait for the results"). Sympathy is sharing the feeling or feeling sorry for the person, which can shift the focus to the nurse. Empathy builds trust, helps clients express feelings and is the basis of the therapeutic relationship.
