I-message

Topic: Fundamentals

A way of speaking that describes a behavior, its effect and one's feeling, then what one needs, without blaming: "When the handover is interrupted, I worry that I'll miss something; I'd like us to finish it first." A "you" message ("You always interrupt") sounds like an accusation and makes the other person defensive. I-messages keep communication open in conflict and when giving feedback.

Also known as:
I-statement, You-message
In Turkish:
Ben dili
