Acute pancreatitis
Topic: Medical-surgical
Acute inflammation in which activated digestive enzymes injure the pancreas and surrounding tissue; gallstones and alcohol are the leading causes. Severe, constant epigastric pain radiating to the back, with nausea and vomiting, is typical, and a high serum lipase supports the diagnosis. Severe cases bring hypovolemia, hypocalcemia, hyperglycemia, ARDS, kidney injury and shock. Give IV fluids and analgesics as ordered; monitor vital signs, intake and output, glucose and calcium; and help the client sit up and lean forward with knees bent for comfort.
