Abdominal aortic aneurysm
Topic: Medical-surgical
A permanent widening of the abdominal aorta to a diameter of 3 cm or more, linked to atherosclerosis, smoking, hypertension, male sex and older age. Most are silent and are found on imaging or as a pulsating abdominal mass; the risk of rupture rises with size and growth rate. Sudden, severe abdominal or back pain with hypotension suggests rupture and needs emergency surgery. Keep blood pressure in the ordered range and teach smoking cessation.
