HIV infection

Topic: Infection control

Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, which destroys CD4+ T lymphocytes and weakens the immune system; untreated, it progresses to AIDS with opportunistic infections. It spreads through blood, sexual contact and from mother to child during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding. With antiretroviral therapy that suppresses the virus, people live healthy lives and do not transmit HIV sexually. Standard precautions are sufficient; support adherence and challenge stigma.
