Airborne precautions

Topic: Infection control

Precautions for infections spread by small particles that stay suspended in the air and travel long distances, such as tuberculosis, measles and varicella. Place the client in a negative-pressure airborne infection isolation room with the door closed. Everyone entering wears a fit-tested N95 or higher-level respirator, and the client wears a surgical mask outside the room. Nonimmune staff should not enter for measles or varicella.
