Chain of infection
Topic: Infection control
The six linked elements needed for an infection to occur: infectious agent, reservoir, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry and susceptible host. Breaking any link prevents infection; for example, hand hygiene targets transmission, vaccination the susceptible host and a sterile dressing the portal of entry. Most nursing infection-prevention practices aim to break one of these links.
