Coping

Topic: Mental health

The cognitive and behavioral efforts a person uses to manage stress. Problem-focused coping acts on the stressor itself (seeking information, making a plan); emotion-focused coping eases the feelings it causes (talking, relaxation, prayer). Adaptive strategies solve the problem or reduce distress; maladaptive ones, such as substance use or withdrawal, add to the problems. Ask what has worked for the client before and build on it.
